Foot In the Mouth...

What actually happened?

Nice sunny day in San Jose, California. Unfortunately instead of being on a beach, I had to be in office :(. No surprise, this is always the case. I was working with one of my English colleagues from UK. He was there for a week. Having lunch together was the only time to know each other personally. Few days later got to know, he was living in UK with his partner since long time and had plans to get married soon.

One fine day we were walking towards the cafeteria. On the way, he told “he prefers to eat vegetarian and sometimes fish”. I could make out from his words that very rarely he has other moving objects…”

Though it was of least interest to me, I asked him "your girlfriend prepares for you?"; He replied "Well for lunch, there is Mc Donald nearby office and he gets to office, dinner sometimes we cook or get it from outside”. We got to the canteen; as usual I took an empty plate for myself. Well I used prepare my lunch and take it to office. He joined me on a round table. There was one other colleague of mine from Bangalore as well. Not keeping quiet, I again asked him "your girlfriend likes veggie stuff?" he replied "yeah sometimes :)) ". Again I asked "She knows to cook vegetarian?" then he replied "well actually my partner is not SHE, its HE and We have been staying together from a long time and also now that in UK it’s legalized we have planned to marry. Yes HE also cooks veggie."

By now I was utterly surprised..???. No words to speak! I wanted to finish of my lunch and just get lost (even I cant do that as I eat very slowly :( ). This was a totally new situation for me. Not knowing what to do, I started talking about the project. Finally I was done with my lunch. We returned back to our desks.

Immediately when I saw him sitting on his desk, I jumped to my other colleague and asked him "did you hear that", he replied "what"; I told, "what he was talking a while ago". My colleague from Bangalore replied "No I am not sure what are you referring to", then I was confused. Either it is so normal to him or he has not heard the conversation. I told about the conversation, he replied "Oh! Is it? I did not notice that" in a surprise.
Then I was little relaxed & felt okay, I am normal. As usual we spoke about it for 10 mins before we got back to work. Even now we speak about it :))

This was something I wasn’t ready for…not that I had never heard of such things but I can call it a human err Indian tendency to be specific.

Days went by but I still wonder…whether I was rite in asking him that question and being embarrassed about it. God knows why?

But for me this was some thing that I call Foot In The Mouth…

Has anybody experienced something like this?
